Lesbian Quarter is a festival that combines art and activism. At the same time it showcases, reflects on, and helps shape local lesbian art, community, and creativity.
Lesbian Quarter is a part of ŠKUC, one of the leading NGOs promoting nonprofit cultural and artistic activities. In the 1980s, ŠKUC was one of the key initiators, supporters, and promoters of alternative culture and LGBT+ community. Since 2012, it has supported and hosted Lesbian Quarter—an artistic and activist festival that presents, reflects on, and helps shape local lesbian art, the movement, the community, and creativity. In a unique way, it opens up public spaces for lesbian creativity and connects lesbians, artists, and the broader queer community.
Lesbian Quarter reminds us that lesbian* time is created through action, not through silence. The festival is a living reminder that visibility is not merely a gesture – it is activism. The festival is crucial for the lesbian community, as it encourages much-needed reflection on systemic discrimination against lesbians* and opens up space to address issues of class, identity, and access. Through art and discourse, the festival fosters critical dialogue and collective learning and contributes to building a society with zero tolerance for discrimination. The festival serves as a convergence of art, activism, and community, where diverse perspectives, experiences, and practices intertwine to co-create a space of solidarity, empowerment, and visibility.
